Training program on Commercial Cultivation of Onion and Garlic under TSP from 10th-12th Nov 2025

Three days training program on “Commercial cultivation of Onion and Garlic” under Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) was organized by ICAR-Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research, Rajgurunagar, Pune in the seminar hall of our institute from 10th-12th Nov 2025 as a part of celebrations of Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh Pakhwada conducted during 1st-15th Nov 2025 for tribal farmers. TSP is a planning and budgeting strategy of the Govt. of India intended to channelize benefits and development investments specifically for Scheduled Tribes so as to reduce the socio-economic gap between tribal and non-tribal populations. The aim is to improve access to services, create income-generating opportunities and protect tribal livelihoods. Today, TSP remains an ongoing component of ICAR’s outreach and extension framework, implemented every year through institute-level plans aimed at empowering tribal farmers and enhancing agricultural development in tribal regions. ICAR-DOGR regularly conducts trainings, demonstrations and input distribution to support cultivation and seed production of onion and garlic providing livelihood opportunities to tribal farmers. A total of 83 selected tribal farmers from different villages (near Bhima Shankar) Ambegaon taluka of Pune (Maharashtra) actively participated in the program. Dr. Vijay Mahajan, Director ICAR-DOGR welcomed all the farmers for the training program and addressed to adapt 18 improved onion and garlic varieties and new production technologies to enhance more income from onion and garlic production of ICAR-DOGR and focus should be given on seed production to meet the requirements of quality seeds in this region. Dr. Amar Jeet Gupta, Principal Scientist (Hort.)/ Onion Breeder & Nodal Officer (TSP), coordinated the program and delivered lectures on TSP activities, improved varieties and production technology of onion and garlic. He conducted 73 training programs as well as Kisan Sangoshthi including 1,245 field demonstrations under the TSP scheme till now and have empowered over 7,000 farmers by significantly enhancing the adoption of improved onion technologies of ICAR-DOGR across the country. He also highlighted the importance of the contributions of Bhagwan Birsa Munda including other tribal freedom fighters during on-going event of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas 2025. Dr Rajiv B Kale, Sr. Scientist (Agril. Extension) co-coordinated the program. Dr. S. S. Gadge, Pr. Scientist (Agril. Extension), spoke on role of self-help groups (SHG) in improving socio-economic status of onion and garlic farmers and Dr. A. Thangasamy, Pr. Scientist highlighted about the nutrient and water management. Dr. Kalyani Gorrepati, Sr. Scientist (AS & PE), discussed food processing in onion and garlic. A pledge on “Empowering Tribals for Viksit Bharat” was taken, and selected farmers were congratulated with training kits for their active participation and taught the seed-saving knowledge, reaffirming the institute’s commitment to tribal empowerment. Farmers including Shri Vijay Dhangat, Shri Kantaram Lohkare and Shri Datta Lohkare expressed satisfaction and appreciated ICAR-DOGR for its support.
