ICAR-DOGR Celebrates Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh Pakhwada for Tribal Empowerment
The ICAR-Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research (DOGR), Pune, successfully celebrated the Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh Pakhwada from 1st to15th Nov 2025, honoring the legacy of Bhagwan Birsa Munda and empowering tribal communities through education, agriculture, entrepreneurship and cultural enrichment. The activities were carried out in a systematic date-wise setup. This Pakhwada inaugurated by Dr. Vijay Mahajan Director ICAR-DOGR inspired with a tribute to Bhagwan Birsa Munda and addressed on highlighting tribal contributions to agriculture. Dr. Amar Jeet Gupta, Pr. Scientist/ Nodal Officer, Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas 2025 briefed about Govt. of India programs includes TSP, SCSP and NEH schemes for tribal farmers. He lectured on TSP initiatives and improved onion and garlic technologies benefiting tribal farmers through TSP. The first week activities included skill development sessions followed by a demonstration on onion transplanting to improve technical capacity among workers. Discussions on livelihood and entrepreneurship empowered SHGs and tribal startups to explore branding and value addition. A morning yoga session promoted the theme of Health and Wellness, while a GI-tagged crop display highlighted the economic strength of tribal produce. This week concluded with cultural immersion as students and staff viewed digital presentations showcasing the beauty, diversity and resilience of India’s tribal traditions. After that explored the pillars of development. Students from the College of Agricultural Biotechnology, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and COA, Baramati have visited ICAR-DOGR on 6th & 7th Nov 2025, gaining insights into research facilities and sustainable agricultural infrastructure. The following day highlighted the achievements of ICAR-DOGR’s Tribal Sub Plan, which have trained over 7,000 farmers since 2012. On 9th Nov 2025, an awareness program educated participants about ongoing government schemes like PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana and Dalhan Self-Reliance Mission fostering agricultural transformation. On 10th Nov 2025, introducing mobile advisory tools and agribusiness incubation support. This week ended with a tribute to tribal freedom fighters reminding participants of the legacy of courage and resistance. Emphasized the tribal empowerment through agriculture and entrepreneurship. On 12th Nov 2025, a public awareness session and seed processing training prepared tribal farmers for scientific production and storage. A Tribal Agri-Entrepreneurship Summit on 13th Nov encouraged innovation, processing and marketing of onion and garlic-based products. A Friday Bazaar on 14th Nov shaped a direct marketplace for tribal farmers to showcase spices, herbal goods, organic foods and value-added items. This Pakhwada concluded on 15th Nov 2025 with Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas celebrations, a seed bank initiative and a pledge toward “Empowering Tribals for Viksit Bharat.” ICAR-DOGR reaffirmed its long-term commitment by highlighting its preservation of 911 onion germplasm accessions, supporting indigenous crops and biodiversity. The farmers expressed their satisfaction and appreciated ICAR-DOGR for its exceptional support to tribal farmers.
